Mrs. Soulsby’s Earth Systems

It is an opportunity for us to reflect on the language and ideas that represented each year. So, take a stroll down memory lane to remember all of our past Word of the Year selections. Change It wasn’t trendy , funny, nor was it coined on Twitter , but we thought change told a real story about how our users defined Unlike in , change was no longer a campaign slogan. But, the term still held a lot of weight. Here’s an excerpt from our Word of the Year announcement in

Scientific measurements such as radiometric dating use the natural radioactivity of certain elements found in rocks to help determine their age. Scientists also use direct evidence from observations of the rock layers themselves to help determine the relative age of rock layers. Specific rock formations are indicative of a particular type of environment existing when the rock was being formed. For example, most limestones represent marine environments, whereas, sandstones with ripple marks might indicate a shoreline habitat or a riverbed.

The study and comparison of exposed rock layers or strata in various parts of the earth led scientists in the early 19th century to propose that the rock layers could be correlated from place to place. Locally, physical characteristics of rocks can be compared and correlated. On a larger scale, even between continents, fossil evidence can help in correlating rock layers.

The Law of Superposition, which states that in an undisturbed horizontal sequence of rocks, the oldest rock layers will be on the bottom, with successively younger rocks on top of these, helps geologists correlate rock layers around the world. This also means that fossils found in the lowest levels in a sequence of layered rocks represent the oldest record of life there.

By matching partial sequences, the truly oldest layers with fossils can be worked out. By correlating fossils from various parts of the world, scientists are able to give relative ages to particular strata. This is called relative dating. Relative dating tells scientists if a rock layer is “older” or “younger” than another. This would also mean that fossils found in the deepest layer of rocks in an area would represent the oldest forms of life in that particular rock formation.

Matching Rock Layers

Dating refers to the archaeological tool to date artefacts and sites, and to properly construct history. All methods can be classified into two basic categories: Based on a discipline of geology called stratigraphy, rock layers are used to decipher the sequence of historical geological events. Relative techniques can determine the sequence of events but not the precise date of an event, making these methods unreliable. These methods are based on calculating the date of artefacts in a more precise way using different attributes of materials.

This method includes carbon dating and thermoluminescence.

Examples from this period have been recovered from ruins of the Erlitou culture , in Shanxi, and include complex but unadorned utilitarian objects. In the following Shang dynasty more elaborate objects, including many ritual vessels, were crafted. The Shang are remembered for their bronze casting, noted for its clarity of detail. Shang bronzesmiths usually worked in foundries outside the cities to make ritual vessels, and sometimes weapons and chariot fittings as well.

The bronze vessels were receptacles for storing or serving various solids and liquids used in the performance of sacred ceremonies. Some forms such as the ku and jue can be very graceful, but the most powerful pieces are the ding , sometimes described as having an “air of ferocious majesty”.

Archaebacteria , Chromista , and Archezoa Thomas Cavalier-Smith thought at first, as it was nearly consensually admitted at that time, that the difference between eubacteria and archaebacteria was so great particularly considering the genetic distance of ribosomal genes that they needed to be separated into two different kingdoms, hence splitting the empire Bacteria into two kingdoms. He then divided Eubacteria into two subkingdoms: Negibacteria Gram negative bacteria and Posibacteria Gram positive bacteria.

Technological advances in electron microscopy allowed the separation of the Chromista from the Plantae kingdom.

Another absolute dating method is thermoluminescence, which dates the last time an item was heated. It is the only method that can be used to date rocks, pottery and minerals for dates that are approximately between to 10, years old.

Pin3 Shares 28 The ocean is one of the biggest mysteries of mankind. People search out facts about the ocean for many reasons. Some are students looking for answers. Some seek to learn more out of pure curiosity. Others may be looking to impress friends or family. Whatever your motivation we have created this list of interesting facts about the ocean to document some of the more captivating facts about the largest bodies of water on planet earth.

Three-quarters of this planet is covered by water bodies, with the biggests ones being the five oceans the Atlantic, Pacific, Southern, Indian, and Arctic oceans. Ninety four percent of all life forms on Earth are aquatic. Oceans have an average depth of two and a half miles ft. The ocean is three percent salt. Its salinity is estimated to be around 34 to 36 ppt parts per thousand , whereas fresh water has a salinity of 0 ppt.

Answer Carbon dating Home In radiometric dating, scientists compare the proportion of a radioactive parent isotope to a stable: _____ Answer Daughter isotope Home Method of determining the absolute age of an object by comparing the relative percentages of a radioactive and stable isotope Answer Radiometric dating Home Radioactive decay.

New information needed to be introduced with parent and daughter isotopes. Once students are in their groups, with supplies, and general directions are given, they are on their own for doing their runs. They will do this 8 times. Once they are finished with their 8 runs, they will record their data on the class data table which can be on the board. Once all groups data is on the table, you can calculate the average for each run and determine a class average. Students should recognize each time the number should go down by appx half.

Then students take the class data and create a graph comparing the number of parent isotopes to the number of half-lives. Once this is done, students have some post questions they are given that they should record in their science notebook. The first post question caused some confusion: Why didn’t each group get the same results?

A lot of the students said because they shook the containers differently This was a new activity we implemented last tear. Radioactive decay and half-lives can be a very difficult concept for our 8th graders to grasp. They not only enjoyed this activity, but they really gained a better understanding of it as well.

Paleomagnetic dating[ edit ] A sequence of paleomagnetic poles usually called virtual geomagnetic poles , which are already well defined in age, constitutes an apparent polar wander path APWP. Such path is constructed for a large continental block. APWPs for different continents can be used as a reference for newly obtained poles for the rocks with unknown age. For paleomagnetic dating it is suggested to use the APWP in order to date a pole obtained from rocks or sediments of unknown age by linking the paleopole to the nearest point on the APWP.

Two methods of paleomagnetic dating have been suggested 1 Angular method and 2 Rotation method.

Student Reading Pick up a rock, any rock, and examine it. Can you see any way to determine its age? Is it ten years or ten million years old? You cannot tell just by looking at it. For this reason, scholars for nearly all of human history had no way of knowing the age of the Earth or its rocks.

We will focus on different types of weather patterns and see why certain regions have different atmospheric conditions. Moreover, we will focus in on the Greenhouse Effect and Global Warming and relate it to climate patterns. We will focus on minerals and how they are the building blocks of rocks and we will show how we can no longer live without these resources. We will place emphasis on the different types of volcanoes around the world and the potential hazards that they impose on mankind.

We will also focus on earthquakes and how we use seismic waves to locate their epicenters. We will also focus on the different agents of erosion and be able to identify the geologic features that each of them create over time.

Archaebacteria , Chromista , and Archezoa Thomas Cavalier-Smith thought at first, as was almost the consensus at that time, that the difference between eubacteria and archaebacteria was so great particularly considering the genetic distance of ribosomal genes that they needed to be separated into two different kingdoms, hence splitting the empire Bacteria into two kingdoms. He then divided Eubacteria into two subkingdoms: Negibacteria Gram negative bacteria and Posibacteria Gram positive bacteria.

Technological advances in electron microscopy allowed the separation of the Chromista from the Plantae kingdom. Indeed, the chloroplast of the chromists is located in the lumen of the endoplasmic reticulum instead of in the cytosol.

Filed under Pagadian City The Philippines, being a country archipelago of islands and seas, have naturally wonderful beaches, some of which are famous the world over. Beaches like Puerto Galera, Boracay, and the various beaches in Cebu rake in tourists from around the world all year round because of their pristine and cool blue waters and fine, white-sand shores.

However, if one will just look around more, they will find that there are other less-known but equally beautiful beach spots in other parts of the Philippines. In Pagadian, in particular, there are beaches and islands that will make one believe that there is such a thing as a secluded paradise on Earth. A nice place to start would be the Dao-Dao Islands some seven to ten minutes away from the seaport, when riding a motorboat.

It is a rather big island, with an area size of about 1. The coral reefs are artificially made, but the whole place is very much ideal for swimming, fishing, and boating. During low tides, a smaller, more undeveloped island appears and like the rest, is also suitable for fishing and swimming. There is also the White Beach that, as its name suggests, is a stretch of white sand beach just minutes southeast of the seaport.

Radiocarbon Dating is used on organic objects only, so the fact that your whole example is based on inorganic rocks and radio carbon dating only suggests that you do not know with any detail or understanding the topic that you are discussing.

Earth Science Unit 1. As sediment is buried several kilometers beneath the surface, heated from below, pressure from overlying layers and chemically-active water converts the loose sediment into solid sedimentary rock Compaction – volume of a sediment is reduced by application of pressure Cementation – sediment grains are bound to each other by materials originally dissolved during chemical weathering of preexisting rocks typical chemicals include silica and calcium carbonate.

Metamorphism occurs when heat and pressure exceed certain levels, destabilizing the minerals in rocks Principle of Superposition Within a sequence of undisturbed sedimentary or volcanic rocks, the layers get younger going from bottom to top. Lateral Continuity An original sedimentary layer extends laterally until it tapers or thins at its edges Cross-cutting Relationships A disrupted pattern is older than the cause of the disruption. Index Fossil — a fossil from a short-lived, geographically widespread species known to exist during a specific period of geologic time.
