Portions of its upper reaches skirt the Grassy Knob Wilderness and also enjoy a Wild and Scenic designation. The river basin below the hatchery then gives way to a flatter more open valley with riverside residences and cattle or sheep ranches. Given the protective nature of its headwaters, the river often runs clear when the neighboring river just to the north, the Sixes River, is still flowing high and muddy. Upper reaches of the Sixes River lies in federal and privately held timberland sometimes subject to heavy logging. Due to the relatively large size and super high quality of the Elk River salmon, many fishermen, some traveling great distances, come to Port Orford each year in late fall and winter to catch these amazing tackle-testing fish. The salmon begin to stage near the mouth in late September and early October, moving in and out with each tide while they wait for sufficient rain to result in enough rise in the river level to allow for passage up to spawning grounds. A long shallow area of tidewater along the sandy bluffs at the mouth can make these fish vulnerable and available to fishermen and seals alike sometimes for a month or two before the regular rains set in.

Umbellularia has long been valued for its many uses by Native Americans throughout the tree’s range, including the Cahuilla , Chumash , Pomo , Miwok , Yuki , Coos , and Salinan people. Both the flesh and the inner kernel of the fruit have been used as food by Native Americans. The fatty outer flesh of the fruit, or mesocarp , is palatable raw for only a brief time when ripe; prior to this the volatile aromatic oils are too strong, and afterwards the flesh quickly becomes bruised, like that of an overripe avocado.

The pit itself was traditionally roasted to a dark chocolate-brown color, removing much of the pungency and leaving a spicy flavor. The flavor, depending on roast level, has been described variously as “roast coffee ,” “dark chocolate ” or “burnt popcorn “. Modern usage[ edit ] The leaf can be used in cooking, but is spicier and “headier” than the Mediterranean bay leaf, and should be used in smaller quantity. It is considered a tonewood , used to construct the backs and sides of acoustic guitars.

The wood is very hard and fine, and is also made into bowls, spoons, and other small items and sold as “myrtlewood”. It is also grown as an ornamental tree , both in its native area, and further north up the Pacific coast to Vancouver in Canada , and in western Europe. It is occasionally used for firewood.

Salmon and Steelhead Strong salmon runs, abundant steelhead make lower Rogue a year-round favorite The legendary salmon and steelhead runs on the Rogue River draw anglers from throughout the country. From the trophy salmon in the Rogue Bay to tasty springers to hard-fighting summer and winter steelhead, the Rogue is worthy of its reputation of being one of the West’s premier places to fish.

Home of the world record fly-caught salmon, a monster plus-pound Chinook, and one of the most plentiful winter steelhead runs in the state, fishing is good on the Rogue year round. A native of the area, he learned at an early age how to troll the Rogue Bay, anchor fish for spring salmon, and fish for the famed half-pounder steelhead near Agness.

Rogue Bay’s big kings make Gold Beach one of Oregon’s top fishing destinations The Rogue Bay, where big fall Chinook stack up in the cooler water near the river’s mouth before heading upstream in late summer and early fall, is one of pro guide Andy Martin’s favorite fisheries. Trolling from jet sleds, anglers catch salmon up to 60 pounds, often within sight of the Highway bridge in Gold Beach.

Aside from big Chinook salmon, the Rogue also receives a healthy run of coho salmon. Andy targets these fish in September and October, when the fall run is at its peak. This is when the biggest kings of the year are caught. The fall Chinook run on the Rogue is often around 50, fish each year, one of the largest salmon runs on the West Coast. The average size also is impressive. The salmon average over 25 pounds, with lots of pounders caught each year, along with some over The Rogue also has a reputation for at times producing wide-open bites.

The river has humble beginnings in the mountains south of Bend, but as it flows northward the Deschutes grows larger and larger thanks to many tributaries and boiling desert springs. The most famous stretch of this magnificent river, known as the Lower Deschutes, starts just North of the town of Madras and flows miles north to the confluence with the Columbia River.

It is the Lower Deschutes River that draws fly anglers from around the world in pursuit of wild trout and summer-run steelhead. The Lower Deschutes River is spectacular to float, with many roadless miles and riverside camping spots along its banks. Where there are roads that parallel the river, they are mostly primitive gravel roads or hiking trails.

Early life[ edit ] Williams was born at St. Luke’s Hospital [10] in Chicago , Illinois on July 21, Her paternal great-grandfather was Mississippi senator and governor Anselm J. He also said that he tried to make her laugh to gain attention. The family lived in a room farmhouse on 20 acres [12] in suburban Bloomfield Hills , Michigan, where he was a student at the private Detroit Country Day School. When Williams was 16, his father took early retirement and the family moved to Tiburon, California.

At the time of his graduation in , he was voted “Most Likely Not to Succeed” and “Funniest” by his classmates. According to College of Marin’s drama professor James Dunn, the depth of the young actor’s talent first became evident when he was cast in the musical Oliver! Williams was known to improvise during his time in Marin’s drama program, leaving cast members in hysterics. He was one of 20 students accepted into the freshman class and one of two students to be accepted by John Houseman into the Advanced Program at the school that year; the other was Christopher Reeve.

William Hurt and Mandy Patinkin were also classmates. He wore tie-dyed shirts with track suit bottoms and talked a mile a minute. I’d never seen so much energy contained in one person.

We did several different runs on the upper river targeting trout on the fly. Ron did an exceptional job of placing the flies right where fish live and the fish were indeed quite responsive. Both days he landed a bunch of scrappy trout, both wild and of hatchery origin. We used a combination of dries and nymphs with the wets working better in the morning and with the dries proving more productive in the afternoon.

On the second morning we decided to mix the plan up a tad and search for late summer steelhead on the lower river. What a great call!
